Remote NoSQL Database Engineer
Description
Remote NoSQL Database Engineer
Role Overview
Can your database decisions reshape the global scale? Ours already do—and now we’re looking for someone who can take it further. As a Remote NoSQL Database Engineer, you'll optimize systems that power critical business functions across continents. This is more than architecture and queries—it’s about designing distributed solutions that hold up millions of operations, deliver sub-second responses, and give engineering teams room to build fearlessly. From defining modern replication strategies to optimizing document-oriented data workflows, your expertise will help future-proof our entire tech stack.
Key Responsibilities
Architect Scalable NoSQL Systems
- Design and evolve NoSQL schema strategies that scale across global traffic patterns without compromising efficiency or readability.
- Implement innovative indexing strategies that drastically reduce query response times and enable seamless access to high-volume datasets.
- Evaluate trade-offs between consistency and availability across distributed data environments and select the best model based on business needs.
Optimize Infrastructure and Automation
- Automate backup, failover, and monitoring routines using tools like Terraform, Ansible, or cloud-native scripting.
- Build infrastructure-as-code templates that enable the fast provisioning of new database clusters and secure deployments.
- Perform capacity planning, run load tests, and implement scaling strategies for peak usage scenarios.
Collaborate Across Teams
- Work closely with backend engineers to co-develop schemas that align with evolving API structures.
- Sync with product managers to assess how data architecture impacts feature lifecycles, from MVP to scale.
- Enable data observability across functions to ensure every stakeholder has the insights they need.
Monitor and Enhance System Reliability
- Optimize data pipelines that fuel everything from real-time analytics dashboards to ML-driven personalization engines.
- Implement self-healing mechanisms to address cluster issues, ensuring high availability and rapid recovery.
- Monitor data replication integrity across multi-region deployments, validating checkpoints and consistency guarantees.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
You’ll work hand-in-hand with backend developers, DevOps engineers, site reliability teams, and product owners. Your architectural insights won’t sit in a silo—they’ll directly influence customer-facing experiences and uptime. Whether it’s guiding junior developers through a query bottleneck or whiteboarding replication topologies with SREs, your voice will be one of leadership and clarity.
Remote Work Environment
This is a fully remote role designed to empower deep work, creativity, and meaningful async collaboration. We prioritize autonomy, accountability, and impact over traditional office hours. Expect daily communication on Slack, collaborative documentation in Notion, and pull request reviews in GitHub. Zoom sessions happen when dialogue matters most. We trust you to design your workday around focus, not noise.
Technical Stack and Tools
Database and Infrastructure
- MongoDB Atlas, Cassandra, Couchbase, or AWS DynamoDB
- Infrastructure as Code tools: Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi
- Amazon EC2, ECS, and S3 integrations
Monitoring and Collaboration
- Prometheus and Grafana for metrics and visualizations
- GitHub for pull requests and documentation
- Notion and Slack for distributed collaboration
Scripting and Automation
- Python for data scripts, Go for systems tools, and Node.js for custom workflows
- Bash scripting for quick CLI tasks and server maintenance
Ideal Candidate Profile
Personal Attributes
- You anticipate scale before it becomes a problem—not after.
- You simplify the complex, making distributed data topics easy to grasp across functions.
- You know when to be scrappy and when to be robust.
- You write documentation like you're teaching your future self.
Technical Expertise
- You've deployed, monitored, and maintained multi-terabyte clusters.
- You understand the CAP theorem not just in theory but in practical product trade-offs.
- You build tooling that reduces manual ops and improves self-service for developers.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience working with NoSQL databases like MongoDB, Cassandra, or DynamoDB in production environments.
- Proven success in architecting scalable and secure data solutions under high-load conditions.
- Solid foundation in distributed systems principles and network topologies.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and experience deploying database changes via GitOps.
- Familiarity with agile development cycles and version-controlled schema evolution.
- Bonus: You’ve built or contributed to internal data tools or OSS database projects.
Milestones and Success Metrics
First 90 Days
- Establish baseline performance metrics for existing NoSQL clusters
- Propose and implement improvements that reduce read/write latency
- Deliver automated backup and alerting scripts into the CI/CD pipeline
First 6 Months
- Spearhead migration of legacy cluster to a more modern architecture
- Mentor engineering team members on NoSQL query optimization and cost-effective storage techniques
- Build an internal knowledge base outlining best practices for document design and indexing
